Description
Anterior pelvic anatomy is centered on the prostate and its prostatic venous plexus, a dense venous network surrounding the gland and lying inferior to the urinary bladder and anterior to the rectum. Venous channels course along the lateral aspects of the prostate and converge posterolaterally toward the internal iliac veins, tracking near the pelvic sidewall vasculature. Superiorly, the bladder base and seminal vesicle region would sit above the gland, while inferiorly the plexus approaches the urogenital diaphragm and proximal penile venous outflow. Spatial relationships are clear. Clinically, this plexus matters because it communicates with the vesical venous plexus and the internal vertebral venous plexus (Batson plexus), a valveless route often cited in hematogenous spread of prostate carcinoma to the spine. The same venous web becomes a practical hazard during transurethral resection of the prostate and radical prostatectomy, where capsular dissection can open thin-walled tributaries and obscure the prostatic apex and external urethral sphincter. For educators, an anterior approach helps distinguish the prostatic plexus from adjacent arterial inflow from the inferior vesical artery and from the neurovascular bundles that run posterolaterally toward the corpora cavernosa. Use this plate in urologic anatomy teaching, pelvic surgery atlases, and oncology publications covering metastatic pathways and pelvic venous drainage patterns, and as a reference graphic for preoperative counseling materials on bleeding risk in benign prostatic hyperplasia procedures.
