Description
Posterior anatomy of an adult male back is presented with the vertebral column running in the midline from the cervical region into the thoracic and lumbar segments, framed laterally by the scapulae and the posterior ribs. Superficially, trapezius spans from the occipital region and nuchal ligament inferiorly toward the spine of the scapula, while deltoid caps the glenohumeral region laterally. Inferior and lateral to the scapula, latissimus dorsi sweeps toward the axilla, and paired erector spinae muscle columns track longitudinally on either side of the spinous processes. Part of the posterior arm is included, with triceps brachii visible distal to the posterior shoulder. Palpating and orienting to the spinous processes, scapular spine, and inferior angle remains the practical starting point for correlating surface landmarks with deeper bony anatomy and segmental levels in the thoracic and lumbar spine. This posterior view also clarifies how the trapezius and rhomboid region overlie the medial border of the scapula, a relationship central to scapular dyskinesis and to patterns of pain referral in myofascial trigger points. Needle placement and surgical approaches depend on it. For example, posterior exposure for thoracolumbar instrumentation and common regional anesthesia targets such as the erector spinae plane block both rely on understanding the paraspinal muscle envelope relative to the transverse processes and rib angles.
