Cecum and Rectum

Description

Arising in the right lower quadrant, the cecum forms the initial, blind-ended pouch of the large intestine, positioned inferior to the terminal ileum and continuous superiorly with the ascending colon at the ileocecal junction. A narrow vermiform appendix is implied on the posteromedial aspect of the cecum, near the convergence of the taeniae coli. Distally, the colon transitions through the sigmoid colon, then continues into the rectum within the pelvis, where the haustra and taeniae coli fade as the rectal wall becomes more uniform. A cut section exposes the mucosa, submucosa, and muscularis externa beneath a glossy serosal surface.
