Description
Situated on the lateral aspect of the male head, the auricle (pinna) is shown with the cutaneous layer removed to expose the superficial auricular musculature and its fine fiber orientation. Anterior to the helix and crus of the helix, the anterior auricular muscle fans toward the temporal fascia, while the superior auricular muscle spans superior to the auricle between the epicranial aponeurosis and the root of the ear. Posterior to the concha and lobule, the posterior auricular muscle runs from the mastoid region toward the cranial surface of the auricle, with fibers arranged to retract the pinna. Small intrinsic auricular muscles along the scapha, antihelix, and conchal margins may be suggested as short red slips closely applied to the auricular cartilage. Fine detail matters here.
