Description
Lateral profile anatomy of the male head and neck exposes the hyoglossus as a quadrangular sheet ascending from the body and greater cornu of the hyoid bone to the lateral margin of the tongue. Superiorly, its fibers blend with intrinsic tongue musculature, while inferiorly it sits deep to the mandibular ramus and adjacent suprahyoid tissues. Medially, the hyoglossus lies against the genioglossus; laterally it relates to the mylohyoid and the submandibular space. Nearby bony landmarks in this cutaway style view include the maxilla and mandible with dentition, the temporal region, and the upper cervical vertebrae. Clinical anatomy lives on the surface of the hyoglossus.
