Description
Anterior cervical anatomy is rendered with semi-transparent soft tissues to expose the laryngeal framework and the thyroid gland in situ. Superiorly, the larynx sits beneath the hyoid region and above the trachea, with the thyroid cartilage forming the dominant anterior contour and the cricoid cartilage positioned inferior to it as a complete ring at the C6 level. The thyroid gland is highlighted over the upper trachea, its right and left lobes lying anterolateral to the airway and joined across the midline by an isthmus that typically overlies the second to fourth tracheal rings; the glottic level lies posterior to the thyroid cartilage, continuous superiorly with the hypopharynx. Surface correlation matters here. This frontal perspective closely matches what you palpate and what you see in open anterior neck exposure, so it supports teaching the relationship of the laryngeal cartilages to the thyroid gland and the midline airway. It also frames common clinical problems: thyroid enlargement can displace the trachea, laryngeal edema at the glottis threatens the narrowest segment of the adult airway, and anterior neck surgery hinges on staying oriented to the thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage, and the thyroid isthmus. A practical landmark. Use it in head and neck anatomy blocks when introducing the larynx, pharynx, and cervical endocrine anatomy, and in otolaryngology or endocrine surgery materials explaining thyroidectomy steps, cricothyrotomy landmarks, or preoperative counseling for voice risk related to laryngeal function.
