Description
Posterior surface anatomy of an adult female torso is rendered with the lungs superimposed within the thoracic cavity, their apices projecting superior to the first ribs and their bases resting on the diaphragm. The trachea descends in the midline and bifurcates at the carina into right and left main bronchi, which course inferolaterally toward the hila before branching into lobar and segmental bronchi within the lung parenchyma. Laterally, the lung fields fill the pleural cavities on either side of the vertebral column, with the medial borders approaching the thoracic midline while remaining separated by the mediastinum. Subtle asymmetry is implied by the typically larger right lung and the more oblique left main bronchus as it passes toward the left hilum. A posterior perspective matters when you are teaching how lungs relate to the vertebral column, ribs, and diaphragm, because auscultation and percussion landmarks are learned on the back long before most trainees ever see a bronchoscopy screen.
