Description
Centered within the male thorax, the trachea descends in the midline and bifurcates at the carina into the right and left main bronchi, which enter the hila and ramify as lobar and segmental bronchi. The right lung is larger and divided by the horizontal and oblique fissures into superior, middle, and inferior lobes, while the left lung shows a single oblique fissure separating superior and inferior lobes, with the cardiac notch indenting the anteromedial margin. Superimposed boundary lines map the bronchopulmonary segments across the anterior surfaces, clarifying how segmental planes relate to the fissures and to neighboring mediastinal structures. Crisp segmental anatomy. Segmental organization matters because each bronchopulmonary segment is supplied by a segmental bronchus and pulmonary artery branch, with veins running intersegmentally, a pattern surgeons follow during segmentectomy for early-stage non small cell lung cancer or for localized bronchiectasis. This anterior internal perspective also supports bronchoscopy teaching by linking bronchial branching to surface territories, and it mirrors how segmental collapse or consolidation is described on chest radiographs and CT (for example, right middle lobe atelectasis or lingular pneumonia). Radiology reporting lives on these boundaries.
