Seen in lateral profile, the masseter blankets the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus, spanning from the inferior border of the zygomatic arch superiorly to the angle of the mandible inferiorly, with fiber bundles running predominantly inferoposterior in the superficial portion and more vertical in the deep portion. Just anterior to it, the coronoid process and mandibular notch frame the transition toward the temporalis tendon, while posteriorly the muscle approaches the region of the parotid gland and the external acoustic meatus.
