Inferior brain anatomy is rendered with emphasis on cranial nerve I, where the olfactory bulbs rest on the cribriform plate region of the anterior cranial fossa and continue posteriorly as the olfactory tracts along the orbital surface of the frontal lobe. Medial to the tracts, the olfactory sulci and adjacent gyri frame the basal frontal cortex, while the tracts run toward the olfactory trigone and anterior perforated substance. Posterior and midline, the brainstem occupies the central field with other cranial nerves emerging from the midbrain, pons, and medulla, and the basal cerebral arteries course around the optic chiasm region in a configuration consistent with the Circle of Willis. Spatial relationships are clear. This inferior perspective matters because olfaction is the only special sensory system that reaches the cerebral hemisphere without a thalamic relay, and its first-order bipolar receptor neurons traverse the cribriform plate to synapse in the olfactory bulb glomeruli. Clinically, it anchors discussions of anosmia after head trauma with shearing of olfactory fila, cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea from cribriform plate fractures, and iatrogenic risk during endoscopic sinus or anterior skull base surgery where the olfactory bulb and tract lie just superior to the ethmoid roof. Correlation with vascular landmarks also helps when teaching basal forebrain infarcts or aneurysms near the anterior communicating artery that can affect adjacent olfactory pathways. Use this plate for neuroanatomy and head and neck teaching sessions that integrate cranial nerves with the basal cerebral circulation, or for textbooks explaining the olfactory pathway from nasal mucosa to primary olfactory cortex.
