Description

Rotating through a close view of the superior lateral scapula, the animation centers on the clavicular facet of the acromion, the smooth oval articular surface for the acromial end of the clavicle at the acromioclavicular (AC) joint. As the camera arcs from anterior to posterior, the facet remains at the superior border of the acromion, lateral to the scapular spine and superior to the glenoid cavity. Subtle changes in angle clarify how the acromion projects anterolaterally from the spine of the scapula while the clavicle approaches from a medial and anterior direction. Edges of the adjacent acromial tip and subcutaneous contour are kept in frame for orientation. A small landmark. AC joint anatomy is a common blind spot because it is compact and superficially placed, yet it drives a large share of shoulder pain and deformity. By keeping the clavicular facet as the fixed reference while the viewpoint shifts, the sequence makes the joint’s articular congruence easier to teach, and it sets up discussions of AC separation (sprain or rupture of the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments) and post-traumatic osteolysis or degenerative AC arthrosis that can mimic subacromial impingement. The animation also helps explain why osteophytes at the inferior AC joint margin can contribute to rotator cuff irritation even when the glenohumeral joint appears preserved. Use this clip in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules, orthopedic and sports medicine slide decks, or patient-facing explanations of AC joint injury patterns and reconstructive planning around the distal clavicle.
