Description
Presented as a semi-transparent overlay on the surface anatomy of a young girl, the upper-body skeleton is visible from the calvaria and facial skeleton down through the clavicles, scapulae, ribs, and proximal humeri. Superiorly, the mandible articulates at the temporomandibular joints, while the cervical vertebrae stack inferiorly to meet the thoracic spine, positioned posterior to the sternum and costal cartilages. Laterally, the clavicles span from the manubrium to the acromion, framing the shoulder girdle and bracketing the superior thoracic aperture. Proximally, the humeral heads sit in the glenoid fossae, with the shafts descending along the lateral chest wall. Pediatric osteology reads differently than adult anatomy, and this view makes that obvious without needing a separate growth-plate diagram. Cartilage and secondary ossification centers influence injury patterns, so distal clavicle physeal injury can mimic acromioclavicular separation on radiographs, and proximal humeral physeal fractures often present after falls on an outstretched hand. The ribcage and thoracic spine alignment also matter in screening and counseling for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, where subtle rib asymmetry and vertebral rotation become clinically meaningful.
