Description
Presented on an adult female skeleton in an upright, slight oblique stance, both tibiae (shinbones) are isolated in blue from the rest of the appendicular skeleton. Each tibia extends inferiorly from the medial tibial plateau at the knee to the medial malleolus at the ankle, lying medial and anterior to the fibula along most of the leg. The anterior border (tibial crest) runs distally as a palpable ridge, while the tibial tuberosity sits just inferior to the condyles on the anterior proximal tibia as the attachment for the patellar ligament. Fibulae remain unhighlighted laterally, clarifying the tibia’s dominant, medial weight-bearing position in the shank. Clinically, the tibia is the workhorse long bone of the lower limb and a frequent site of both high-energy and stress injury, from spiral tibial shaft fractures to medial tibial stress syndrome along the posteromedial border. The proximal tibia matters in knee trauma: tibial plateau fractures threaten the articular surface and menisci, and the intercondylar region anchors the ACL and PCL, making alignment and joint congruity the main priorities in operative planning. Distally, the medial malleolus contributes to the ankle mortise, a key landmark when discussing bimalleolar and trimalleolar fracture patterns and syndesmotic stability.
