Description
Oriented to the internal base of the male skull, this superior view centers on the vestibulocochlear nerve (cranial nerve VIII) as it traverses the posterior cranial fossa toward the petrous part of the temporal bone. CN VIII runs lateral to the pontomedullary junction in close company with the facial nerve (CN VII), then enters the internal acoustic meatus on the posterior surface of the petrous ridge, with the labyrinthine artery often coursing nearby. Surrounding landmarks likely include the clivus medially, the margins of the foramen magnum inferiorly, and adjacent exits for the lower cranial nerves at the jugular foramen and hypoglossal canal. This view matters because the internal acoustic meatus is the surgical and radiologic gateway to the cerebellopontine angle, where vestibular schwannomas and meningiomas commonly displace CN VIII and compress CN VII.
