Description
Habenular trigone occupies the dorsomedial surface of the posterior thalamus within the epithalamus, forming a small triangular field immediately lateral to the midline and bordering the roof of the third ventricle. From a posterior-superior vantage typical for dorsal diencephalic anatomy, the right and left habenular trigones sit symmetrically on either side of the pineal region, with the medial and lateral habenular nuclei lying deep to the surface relief. Stria medullaris thalami approaches the habenula along the dorsomedial thalamus, and the habenular commissure spans the midline just anterior to the pineal stalk. Small structure, big connections. Clinically, the habenular complex is a relay between forebrain limbic inputs and midbrain monoaminergic nuclei, so its anatomy gets pulled into discussions of reward prediction, aversion circuitry, and mood disorders, including treatment-resistant depression and addiction.
