Description

Rotating in close-up around a typical cervical vertebra, the sequence isolates the inferior articular process at the posterolateral junction of pedicle and lamina. The inferior articular facet is shown sloping anteroinferiorly, forming the lower half of the zygapophysial (facet) joint with the superior articular facet of the vertebra below, while the vertebral arch and adjacent bony landmarks stay oriented in anatomical position. As the camera orbits, the relationship to the ipsilateral superior articular process, lamina, and pedicle becomes clear, with the articular pillar highlighted as the bony bridge between superior and inferior facets. Subtle changes in perspective emphasize how facet orientation differs from thoracic and lumbar levels. Facet anatomy drives cervical kinematics and pain patterns. The oblique plane of the cervical zygapophysial joints permits coupled rotation and lateral flexion, but it also concentrates load at the inferior articular process during extension and at end-range movements after whiplash. This animation makes joint geometry legible in a way static diagrams struggle to do, letting you track the facet surface as it turns in space and appreciate why medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation target the facet joint complex rather than the intervertebral disc. Small bone, common generator. Use it in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules when teaching vertebral arch landmarks, and in spine education for explaining cervical facet arthropathy, facet-mediated neck pain, and fluoroscopic planning around the articular pillar during posterior approaches. It also fits neatly into atlases and publisher explainer pieces on zygapophysial joint orientation by region. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
