Description
Rotating through an inferior view of a typical cervical vertebra, the animation centers on the inferior articular facet (facies articularis inferior) on the articular process, with its smooth hyaline cartilage bearing surface oriented posteroinferiorly. The facet sits lateral to the vertebral foramen and posterior to the vertebral body, and it is framed by the laminae medially and the transverse process laterally. As the camera angle shifts, the zygapophysial region is clarified in relation to the spinous process posteriorly and the pedicles anterolaterally. Orientation cues keep left and right distinct. Facet geometry in the cervical spine drives coupled motion, rotation with lateral flexion, and it also explains why the neck tolerates a wider range of motion than the thoracic region. Clinically, these synovial zygapophysial joints are common pain generators in cervical spondylosis and whiplash-associated disorders, and they are a target for medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation along the course of the dorsal rami.
