Description
Medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) occupies the ventral portion of the pontine tegmentum, positioned just dorsal to the basilar part of the pons and close to the midline, where decussating auditory fibers of the trapezoid body traverse the brainstem. Neuronal cell groups are presented as a compact, elongated cluster in the anteroposterior depth of the lower pons, with the surrounding pontine tegmentum providing clear separation from adjacent longitudinal tracts. Laterally, the field naturally aligns with the region of the superior olivary complex, while posteriorly the image context implies the floor of the fourth ventricle and central tegmental structures. Spatial relationships are expressed in standard neuroanatomical terms (rostral-caudal, medial-lateral) to support orientation within the brainstem. Functionally, the MNTB is a major glycinergic inhibitory relay in the auditory brainstem, receiving excitatory input from the contralateral cochlear nucleus via the calyx of Held and shaping binaural processing for sound localization.
