Description
Nucleus of the tractus solitarius (nucleus tractus solitarii, NTS) occupies the dorsolateral medulla as a longitudinal column of gray matter that closely hugs the solitary tract (tractus solitarius) along the posterior aspect of the brainstem. Medially, the NTS lies near the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and the hypoglossal nucleus, while laterally it approaches the spinal trigeminal nucleus and tract. Superior and inferior extents follow the medullary tegmentum, with the adjacent area postrema and the caudal floor of the fourth ventricle providing dorsal surface landmarks for orientation. A tight neighborhood. Functionally, the NTS is the first central relay for visceral afferent input carried in cranial nerves VII, IX, and X, so its internal topography matters when you are mapping autonomic reflex arcs and taste pathways in one region. Baroreceptor and chemoreceptor signaling from the carotid sinus and aortic arch synapses here before influencing medullary autonomic centers, and focal dorsolateral medullary infarction (Wallenberg syndrome) can disrupt this network, contributing to dysphagia, impaired gag reflex, and cardiorespiratory instability depending on lesion extent.
