Raphe obscurus nucleus occupies the median raphe of the caudal medulla oblongata, forming a slender column of serotonergic neurons immediately adjacent to the midline raphe and ventral to the floor of the fourth ventricle. In this fixed brainstem perspective, the nucleus is positioned between left and right medial medullary structures, lying posterior to the pyramids (corticospinal tracts) and medial to the inferior olivary complex, with nearby landmarks that often include the medial lemniscus and the hypoglossal nucleus more dorsally. Its long, sheetlike profile along the rostrocaudal axis reads as a narrow band rather than a bulky nucleus. Midline anatomy matters here.
