Description
Amygdaloid transition areas occupy the anteromedial temporal lobe at the junction of the amygdala and adjacent allocortical and periallocortical fields. In a sagittal section, the amygdaloid complex sits superior and slightly anterior to the hippocampal formation, with transition zones blending medially into the periamygdaloid cortex and rostrally toward the piriform and entorhinal cortices around the uncus. Posteriorly, the amygdaloid-hippocampal interface approaches the head of the hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus, providing a continuous cortical-subcortical boundary rather than a sharp nuclear margin. These interfaces matter in temporal lobe epilepsy and in medial temporal lobe resections, where surgeons aim to address seizure foci while respecting the proximity of the hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and temporal horn of the lateral ventricle. Small differences in where you place the border between amygdaloid nuclei and surrounding cortex can change how a lesion, sclerosis pattern, or postoperative cavity is interpreted on MRI. The single-plane sagittal perspective emphasizes anterior-to-posterior relationships along the uncus and parahippocampal region. Borders read well.
