Description

Dominating the anterior portion of each lumbar vertebra, the vertebral body appears as a broad, cylindrical mass of cancellous bone bounded by a thin cortical shell and capped superiorly and inferiorly by the endplates. In sequence, the animation situates the body relative to the posterior vertebral arch, with the pedicles projecting posteriorly from the posterolateral body to frame the vertebral foramen. Subtle changes in contour across levels are implied, with the lumbar bodies widening mediolaterally and increasing in size from superior to inferior as the load-bearing demands rise toward L5. Weight transfer through the lumbar spine concentrates at the vertebral body and its endplates, which makes this region the common failure point in osteoporotic compression fractures and traumatic burst fractures. Animated staging clarifies how axial loading propagates through the endplates into the trabecular network, and why retropulsion from a burst fracture threatens the spinal canal even though the vertebral body sits anterior to it. Clear orientation of the pedicle-body junction also supports teaching around transpedicular access and vertebroplasty trajectories. Use this animation in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal blocks when introducing lumbar vertebral morphology, in radiology teaching to correlate sagittal CT or MRI appearances with endplate and body integrity, and in spine surgery education when discussing fracture classification and cement augmentation planning. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
