Description
Running superficially from the anterior superior iliac spine to the medial surface of the proximal tibia, the sartorius forms a long, straplike band that crosses the anterior thigh obliquely from superolateral to inferomedial. Along its course it lies anterior to the iliopsoas and femoral vessels proximally, then sweeps over the quadriceps femoris region, passing medial to the patella before reaching the anteromedial tibia at the pes anserinus. Medial thigh contours logically include the adductor longus and gracilis, while the lateral compartment is anchored by the tensor fasciae latae and iliotibial tract. A clean landmark. Clinically, this anterior perspective is the one you want for teaching surface anatomy and for understanding why the sartorius helps define the femoral triangle: its lateral border frames the neurovascular corridor where the femoral artery and vein and femoral nerve are approached for vascular access and regional anesthesia. Distally, the illustration supports discussion of pes anserine pain syndrome and bursitis, where the conjoined insertions of sartorius, gracilis, and semitendinosus on the medial tibia become tender with overuse or valgus knee mechanics.
