Description

Running inferiorly from the greater tubercle, the anterior border of the humerus is traced as a sharp longitudinal ridge along the proximal shaft in a true anterior view. The animation cues orientation by holding the humeral head medial and the greater tubercle lateral, then follows the ridge distally as it blends into the anterolateral surface of the diaphysis. Subtle rotation around the long axis clarifies how this border relates anteriorly to the intertubercular sulcus (bicipital groove) and laterally to the deltoid tuberosity. Landmarks come in sequence. For teaching osteology of the arm (brachium), this border is an efficient way to stop students from losing the proximal humerus in space, since it anchors the viewer between the tubercles, the surgical neck, and the shaft. You can also tie it to clinical anatomy: fractures at the surgical neck place the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery at risk, and recognizing the proximal contours from an anterior perspective helps correlate physical exam findings with radiographs. Motion makes the ridge understandable, since its apparent “edge” changes with small changes in viewing angle. Use it in upper limb anatomy labs, orthopedic teaching files, and figure panels that need a clean anterior orientation of the humerus before moving on to muscle attachments, approaches, or implant positioning. It also fits well in exam-prep modules that test bony landmarks in isolation before adding soft tissue. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
