Anterior tegmental nucleus (nucleus tegmentalis anterior) sits within the rostral midbrain tegmentum, presented from a posterior (rear) perspective so its position is appreciated relative to the dorsal midbrain contour and the surrounding tegmental gray. In this fixed view, the nucleus lies superior to the pontine tegmentum and inferior to the diencephalic junction, ventral to the periaqueductal gray and dorsal to the cerebral peduncles. Medially it approaches the midline tegmentum, while laterally it is separated from the substantia nigra region by intervening tegmental tissue. Small structure, big implications. Neuroanatomy learners often struggle to place deep tegmental nuclei because they are not surface landmarks, and the anterior tegmental nucleus is a prime example: it occupies a narrow corridor where dopaminergic, reticular, and limbic-associated pathways converge in the midbrain.
