Description

Positioned in left lateral profile, the left main bronchus continues into the inferior lobar bronchus and then divides into the segmental bronchi of the left lower lobe. A focal emphasis falls on the anteromedial basal segmental bronchus (B8), coursing anteriorly and medially from the basal bronchial trunk toward the anteromedial portion of the inferior lobe parenchyma. Superior to this pathway, the superior segmental bronchus (B6) typically projects dorsally, while adjacent basal branches (often the anterior basal B7 when present, and the lateral and posterior basal bronchi, B9 and B10) arise nearby, establishing the spatial logic of segmental anatomy within the lower lobe. Fine, hierarchical arborization is shown. Segmental bronchial patterns matter most when you need to think in bronchopulmonary segments rather than lobes, since a segmentectomy, targeted bronchoscopy, or selective suctioning depends on recognizing which bronchus supplies which wedge of lung. The anteromedial basal segment is a common site for dependent atelectasis and retained secretions in supine patients, and accurate identification of B8 guides bronchoscopic navigation and sampling when infection, aspiration-related changes, or localized hemorrhage is suspected in the anteromedial basal region. Surgical planning benefits too, because the bronchus runs alongside segmental pulmonary arterial branches and is closely related to intersegmental planes defined by pulmonary venous drainage. Use this asset for thoracic anatomy and respiratory system teaching in gross anatomy, pulmonary medicine, and cardiothoracic surgery courses, or as a figure in atlases, bronchoscopy guides, and segmentectomy manuscripts that require correct left lower lobe segmental nomenclature (segmentalis, anteromedialis, basalis). It also suits clinical education materials that map CT bronchial anatomy to bronchoscopic routes and bronchopulmonary segments. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
