Description
Anterior anatomy of the upper limb is rendered with the arm in anatomical position, so the humerus sits proximal to the radius and ulna, and the carpal, metacarpal, and phalangeal bones align distally into the hand. Along the medial aspect of the arm the brachial artery courses inferiorly toward the cubital fossa, where it continues into the forearm as the radial artery laterally and the ulnar artery medially, tracking toward the wrist. Superficial veins accompany this arterial map, with the cephalic vein running along the lateral border of the arm and forearm and the basilic vein ascending medially. Bone and vessel relationships read clearly. This perspective matters when you need to teach or plan vascular access and distal perfusion assessment in the living patient. The cubital fossa is the landmark. Arterial puncture and catheterization commonly target the radial artery at the distal forearm or wrist, while venipuncture and peripheral IV placement often favor the cephalic or basilic systems, and the close proximity of vessels to the bicipital aponeurosis and underlying radius helps explain both successful access and occasional complications. Ideal for gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching in upper extremity blocks, and for clinical skills manuals covering phlebotomy, arterial blood gas sampling, and Allen test concepts prior to transradial procedures.
