Description
Anteriorly, the distal femur, patella, tibia, and fibula frame the knee joint on both sides, with the patellar tendon descending from the patellar apex to the tibial tuberosity. Deep to the vastus intermedius, the articularis genus appears as a thin, superiorly placed sheet of muscle fibers on the anterior distal femoral shaft, immediately proximal to the suprapatellar recess. Its fibers run inferiorly toward the synovial membrane of the knee, lying posterior to the quadriceps tendon and anterior to the femoral cortex. Small but specific. Functionally, articularis genus tensions and elevates the anterior synovial membrane during knee extension, reducing the risk of synovial or suprapatellar fat pad impingement beneath the quadriceps tendon. That relationship matters in anterior knee pain patterns, postoperative arthrofibrosis, and after suprapatellar approaches where adhesions can tether the suprapatellar pouch and limit flexion. For surgeons and radiologists, it is also a landmark when correlating quadriceps anatomy with the suprapatellar recess on MRI or when planning arthroscopy portals to avoid unnecessary synovial irritation.
