Description
Posterior to the auricle (pinna), the auricularis obliquus is presented as a thin band of striated fibers coursing obliquely across the cranial surface of the concha toward the posterior aspect of the auricular cartilage. Its fibers lie immediately deep to the skin, superficial to the elastic cartilage of the auricle, and adjacent to the insertional region of the auricularis posterior as it approaches the mastoid region. Lateral to the temporal bone, the muscle sits in the same superficial fascial plane as the periauricular attachments of the scalp. Small and easy to miss. Recognition of the auricular oblique muscle helps clarify why some patients can produce subtle ear movements while others cannot, and it reinforces the concept that the external ear retains vestigial extrinsic and intrinsic musculature with limited functional demand in humans. Posterior periauricular anatomy also matters for otoplasty planning and postauricular incisions, where thin subcutaneous tissues overlying the auricular cartilage and its muscle slips influence flap elevation, dead space, and postoperative contour. This view also supports interpretation of periauricular pain sources when superficial dissection irritates the region around the conchal cartilage and mastoid attachments.
