Description

Rotating in a posterior orientation, the animation isolates the body of the ilium, the thick central segment of the os coxae interposed superiorly with the iliac wing (ala ossis ilii) and inferiorly with the ischium. The posterior ilium is read through its major relief, the posterior gluteal lines on the external surface and the transition medially toward the iliac tuberosity and auricular surface for the sacrum. As the view settles, the posterior border landmarks come into alignment, from the posterior superior iliac spine down toward the posterior inferior iliac spine adjacent to the greater sciatic notch. Spatial relationships stay consistent: lateral gluteal surface facing outward, medial sacropelvic surface facing inward, and the iliac crest superior to both. Teaching the ilium from behind matters because palpation and imaging often rely on posterior landmarks, not the acetabulum or pubic symphysis. The posterior superior iliac spine acts as a surface marker for sacroiliac joint level and is used when orienting pelvic radiographs, planning sacroiliac screw trajectories, or correlating pain referral patterns in suspected sacroiliac dysfunction. Motion adds clarity here, letting the viewer track how the body of the ilium thickens as it approaches the sacroiliac articulation, and how the greater sciatic notch relates to the posterior border that frames the exit routes of the sciatic nerve and superior gluteal neurovascular bundle. Use it in pelvic girdle anatomy labs, musculoskeletal radiology teaching files, and orthopedic or sports medicine modules addressing pelvic ring injury patterns and posterior pelvic approach planning. It also fits atlas-style publisher content where a clean posterior coxal bone orientation is needed for labeling and assessment. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
