Description
Running along the anterolateral forearm, the brachioradialis is emphasized from its proximal origin at the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus to its distal tendon inserting on the lateral surface of the distal radius near the radial styloid process. Proximally, its medial margin frames the lateral border of the cubital fossa, sitting lateral to pronator teres while lying anterior to the lateral epicondylar region. Distally, the muscle belly narrows into a stout tendon that crosses the wrist on the radial side, with the radius forming its deep bony substrate and the tendinous architecture of the hand extending inferiorly into view. Clean anatomy. Clinically, this anterior perspective is the one you want for teaching brachioradialis as a landmark muscle: it overlies the radial shaft, helps define the palpable contour on the radial side of the forearm, and guides orientation to the radial artery, which courses just medial to the brachioradialis tendon in the distal forearm. That relationship matters during arterial cannulation and during volar-radial surgical approaches, where protecting the superficial branch of the radial nerve as it emerges from beneath brachioradialis in the distal third of the forearm can prevent dysesthesia over the dorsolateral hand. The muscle’s strong elbow flexion in mid-pronation also explains why it remains active when biceps brachii mechanical advantage drops. Use this asset in upper limb gross anatomy labs to anchor cubital fossa boundaries, in orthopedic or hand surgery texts covering distal radius exposure, or in rehabilitation materials discussing radial nerve sensory symptoms and elbow flexor testing.
