Description
Running along the anterolateral forearm, the brachioradialis forms a fusiform superficial contour from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus to the distal radius near the radial styloid process. Medial to it lie the biceps brachii tendon and the flexor mass crossing the cubital fossa, while laterally its border tracks toward the thumb side of the wrist in anatomical position. Deep and medial, the radius parallels the ulna from the elbow joint to the carpal bones, with the humerus positioned superiorly and the hand skeleton extending distally through the metacarpals and phalanges. Clinically, this muscle matters because it is a reliable surface landmark for the radial nerve as the nerve emerges anterior to the lateral epicondyle and then divides into superficial and deep branches in the proximal forearm, a relationship that guides safe dissection and helps explain neuropathic pain patterns. The anterior perspective also suits teaching the brachioradialis as a primary elbow flexor in mid pronation, and as the effector for the C6 brachioradialis reflex tested by tapping just proximal to the radial styloid. A practical discriminator. Tenderness at the lateral elbow with resisted flexion in neutral forearm rotation can implicate brachioradialis strain and helps separate it from classic lateral epicondylitis centered on the extensor carpi radialis brevis origin.
