Description
Running obliquely across the proximal forearm, the pronator teres is highlighted beneath the superficial fascia from its humeral origin at the medial epicondyle to its insertion on the lateral surface of the radial shaft. Proximally, its belly lies anterior to the elbow joint and forms part of the medial border of the cubital fossa, with the brachioradialis positioned more laterally and the flexor-pronator mass grouped medially. Distally, the muscle tapers as it crosses anterior to the radius, sitting superficial to the flexor digitorum superficialis and medial to the radial extensors as the forearm continues toward the wrist and hand. Orientation is straight anterior, elbow superior, hand inferior. Clear landmarks. Clinically, this view matters because the median nerve passes between the humeral and ulnar heads of pronator teres, a well-known site of compression in pronator teres syndrome that can mimic carpal tunnel with forearm pain and provocative symptoms during resisted pronation. Surgeons and anatomists also use pronator teres as a surface landmark when planning medial elbow exposures, interpreting tenderness at the pronator origin in golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis), or discussing why proximal forearm pain can persist even when wrist-level median nerve tests are negative.
