Description
Anteriorly, the forearm is oriented in supination so the radius lies lateral to the ulna and the interosseous space opens between them. The pronator teres is presented as a two headed muscle with a humeral head arising from the medial epicondyle and common flexor origin, and an ulnar head from the coronoid process, the two bellies converging into a tendon that crosses obliquely inferolaterally to insert on the lateral surface of the mid radius. Proximally, the distal humerus and elbow joint landmarks frame the origin region, while distally the radius and ulna continue to the carpus, metacarpals, and phalanges. Clear obliquity. For teaching forearm compartments, this anterior view makes the pronator teres an anchor for locating adjacent neurovascular structures at the elbow. The median nerve typically passes between the humeral and ulnar heads, a classic site of entrapment in pronator teres syndrome that can mimic carpal tunnel symptoms but often worsens with resisted pronation and elbow flexion. Surgeons and anatomists also use this muscle as a surface and dissection landmark when approaching the proximal radius, the bicipital aponeurosis, and the anterior elbow crease.
