Description
Spinal trigeminal nucleus, pars interpolaris, forms a narrow longitudinal column in the dorsolateral medulla at the level of the medullary tegmentum, positioned just medial to the spinal trigeminal tract and lateral to the reticular formation. From this lateral perspective, the interpolar subdivision reads as a thin vertical band extending rostrocaudally between the caudal pontine region and the rostral medulla, continuous superiorly with more pontine trigeminal sensory territory and inferiorly with the caudal (pars caudalis) segment. Dorsal to it, the floor of the fourth ventricle and adjacent tegmental structures frame the posterior brainstem surface, while ventrolaterally the band sits deep to the region that would correspond externally to the lateral medullary contour. A small structure with big clinical fingerprints. Functionally, the interpolar part participates in processing facial somatosensation with emphasis on nociception and temperature and it contributes to reflex circuits, including components of the corneal blink reflex via trigeminal afferents before interneuronal connections to the facial motor nucleus. This fixed lateral view helps anchor the nucleus within the lateral medullary tegmentum, a location repeatedly tested in lesion localization because a dorsolateral medullary (PICA territory) infarct can involve the spinal trigeminal tract and nucleus together, producing ipsilateral loss of pain and temperature from the face with a characteristic crossed pattern when spinothalamic involvement adds contralateral body deficits. Soft, directional lighting and the band-like emphasis make the interpolar subdivision easier to distinguish from adjacent longitudinal columns that otherwise blend in standard gross brainstem diagrams. Neuroanatomy faculty can place this illustration in brainstem sensory pathway lectures, cranial nerve V lab practicals, and stroke-syndrome teaching files that contrast trigeminal sensory nucleus involvement with medial medullary patterns.
