Principal sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve occupies the dorsolateral pontine tegmentum in this lateral (side) view, appearing as a rounded gray matter cell group immediately lateral to the motor trigeminal nucleus. The trigeminal root entry zone lies anterolateral to the tegmentum, placing the principal sensory nucleus medial and slightly posterior to incoming primary afferents that carry discriminative touch and vibration from the face and oral cavity. Superior and inferior pontine contours frame the nucleus within the brainstem, and nearby longitudinal pathways in the tegmentum help orient the viewer to the medial-lateral depth of this region.
