Description
Seen in left lateral profile beneath the dermal layer of the male cheek, the buccinator forms a broad, thin muscular sheet spanning between the maxilla and mandible in the region of the molar teeth. Its fibers run predominantly anteromedially toward the oral commissure, interlacing with orbicularis oris at the modiolus, while lying deep to the buccal fat pad and superficial to the oral mucosa. Posteriorly, the masseter is positioned on the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus, providing a clear landmark for the buccinator’s relationship to the masticatory apparatus. Depth planes are the point. Functionally, this lateral, subdermal presentation helps clarify how buccinator compresses the cheek against the teeth, keeping the food bolus on the occlusal tables during mastication and preventing vestibular trapping. That relationship matters in clinical practice when evaluating cheek biting, post-stroke oral incompetence, or facial nerve (buccal branch) dysfunction affecting buccinator tone, and it also frames the anatomy relevant to intraoral approaches that traverse the buccal mucosa. Salivary flow can be discussed here as well, since the parotid duct typically pierces buccinator opposite the maxillary second molar, a common landmark for duct cannulation and for avoiding iatrogenic injury.
