Description
Caudal pontine reticular nucleus (nucleus reticularis pontis caudalis) occupies the ventral portion of the pontine tegmentum in this frontal, anterior-facing brainstem illustration. The highlighted nuclear region sits inferior to the mid-pons and superior to the rostral medulla, positioned medial to the middle cerebellar peduncles and deep to the ventral pontine surface. Dorsally, its territory approaches the floor of the fourth ventricle, while medially it blends with neighboring reticular formation elements that track along the midline. Boundaries are intentionally simplified to keep the nucleus readable. Clinically, the caudal pontine reticular nucleus is a practical anchor for teaching pontine reticular formation function, including arousal modulation, sensorimotor integration, and the circuitry of the acoustic startle response that can be exaggerated in hyperekplexia-like syndromes and brainstem lesions.
