Description
Locus coeruleus (cerulean nucleus) is identified within the rostral pons, positioned dorsolaterally just inferior to the midbrain and lateral to the midline tegmentum. From the fixed anterior perspective, the ventral surface landmarks of the brainstem provide orientation while the nucleus is localized deeper toward the dorsal pontine tegmentum, adjacent to the region of the superior cerebellar peduncle and the floor of the fourth ventricle. Its neuromelanin pigment is emphasized as a discrete, compact neuronal cluster rather than a diffuse field. Depth matters here. Noradrenergic neurons of the locus coeruleus project widely through the CNS, so its placement in the pontine tegmentum becomes clinically relevant when correlating arousal, attention, and autonomic responses with focal brainstem disease. Degeneration of this pigmented nucleus is discussed in Parkinson disease and Alzheimer disease, and its functional suppression is a practical concept in anesthesiology and critical care when explaining sedation, analgesia, and delirium phenotypes.
