Description
Running centrally through a standing male child, the heart sits in the middle mediastinum with the ascending aorta arching superiorly and leftward to continue as the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta, then dividing inferiorly into the common iliac and femoral arteries. Paired carotid and subclavian arteries course superiorly and laterally into the head and upper limbs, while arterial branches extend distally through the brachial, radial, and ulnar pathways toward the hands. Venous return tracks in parallel, with superficial and deep veins converging proximally into the brachiocephalic veins and superior vena cava above, and the inferior vena cava below, collecting blood from the iliac and femoral systems as well as the abdominal viscera. Red arterial channels and blue venous channels make the systemic circuit easy to parse at a glance.
