Description
Centered in an anterior view of an adult male torso, the heart sits in the middle mediastinum, slightly left of the midline, with the ascending aorta rising superiorly before curving into the aortic arch and continuing as the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta. Red-coded systemic arteries branch laterally into the subclavian and common carotid arteries in the superior thorax and neck region, then continue distally as major conduits toward the upper limb and abdominal viscera. Blue-coded systemic veins converge medially toward the superior vena cava from the brachiocephalic veins and toward the inferior vena cava from the abdominal and pelvic venous tributaries. Pulmonary outflow and return are implied at the cardiac base, adjacent to the great vessels. Color separation between arteries and veins makes this plate useful for teaching flow direction and for orienting the great vessels during clinical correlation. The relationship of the aortic arch to the superior vena cava and brachiocephalic veins is a frequent source of confusion when students transition from schematic diagrams to angiography, CTA, and central venous access anatomy. Line placement also supports discussion of common high-yield patterns, including atherosclerotic disease in the aorta and its branches, and the pathway of venous return relevant to right-heart strain and caval obstruction.
