Description

Posteriorly oriented, the head and upper thorax are outlined by the major cervical and cranial vessels: the common carotid arteries ascend within the neck and continue as internal and external carotid systems, while the internal jugular veins descend lateral to the carotid pathways to rejoin the brachiocephalic veins and superior vena cava. Superior to the clavicular region, paired vertebral arteries track cranially toward the skull base, running deep and medial in the posterior neck relative to the more superficial jugular venous drainage. Across the scalp and face, external carotid branches fan laterally and anteriorly, while venous channels converge into larger trunks that course inferiorly toward the thoracic inlet. Color coding separates arterial inflow (red) from venous return (blue). Clear landmarks. This posterior perspective matters when you need to teach what sits deep in the neck versus what remains more superficial, and how blood reaches and leaves the cranium through tightly packed corridors at the skull base. The arrangement of the internal carotid and vertebral systems frames core stroke anatomy, including atherosclerotic disease at the carotid bifurcation and posterior circulation ischemia related to vertebrobasilar insufficiency. It also supports procedural planning, from central venous access via the internal jugular vein to neck dissection and carotid endarterectomy where vessel position relative to surrounding soft tissues drives exposure and risk. Use it in head and neck anatomy blocks, neurovascular teaching sessions, or as a figure for textbooks and review articles discussing extracranial carotid disease, jugular venous drainage, and collateral pathways between facial and scalp vessels. It also fits patient-facing educational materials for carotid stenosis and stroke prevention when a simplified but anatomically correct map of vessel routes is needed. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
