Description
Originating at the thorax, the subclavian artery continues as the axillary artery deep to the pectoral region, then becomes the brachial artery along the medial aspect of the arm before dividing in the cubital fossa into the radial and ulnar arteries that course distally into the forearm and hand. Paired venae comitantes accompany the deep arteries and converge proximally toward the axillary and subclavian veins, while the superficial venous network tracks in the subcutaneous tissue, with the cephalic vein laterally and the basilic vein medially, linked across the anterior elbow by the median cubital vein. A posterior-oriented, proximal perspective also supports appreciation of how the scapular and circumflex humeral branches wrap around the shoulder girdle to meet the arm circulation. Landmarks stay consistent. Arteries run deep, veins often superficial. Clinically, this layout explains why brachial artery occlusion or iatrogenic injury proximal to the elbow can threaten both radial and ulnar inflow, and why distal perfusion depends on collateral pathways around the elbow and shoulder. The superficial pattern matters for venipuncture and cannulation, where the median cubital vein is often targeted, while the cephalic vein provides a common route for pacemaker or port access via the deltopectoral groove into the axillary system. For trauma and vascular exam teaching, the relationships of the radial artery at the wrist and the ulnar artery in Guyon canal downstream are easier to understand when you start with the proximal trunks and their branching logic.
