Description
Profile view of the male head and upper thorax traces the major arteries in red and veins in blue as they course from the mediastinum into the neck and face. Superior to the aortic arch, the common carotid artery ascends within the carotid sheath and bifurcates near the level of the mandibular angle into the internal carotid artery (deep, posterior, and cranial toward the cranial cavity) and external carotid artery (more anterior, giving off facial-scalp branches). Beneath the zygomatic arch, the superficial temporal vessels run superiorly in front of the ear while the transverse facial and maxillary territories occupy the infratemporal region deep to the ramus and arch. It reads cleanly. Clinically, the lateral perspective makes surface-proximal vascular landmarks easy to teach, including the superficial temporal artery where a pulse is palpated and where temporal (giant cell) arteritis can threaten vision via ophthalmic circulation. The carotid bifurcation region is also where atherosclerotic plaque commonly forms, and this view supports explanation of carotid endarterectomy planning relative to the sternocleidomastoid, mandibular angle, and skull base. Venous pathways help clarify why infections in the midface can spread through valveless connections toward the cavernous sinus.
