Description
Running along the mesenteric border of the ascending colon and proximal transverse colon, the colic lymphatics are rendered as green collecting vessels that converge on chains of mesenteric nodes adjacent to the colic arterial arcades. From an anterior perspective in a male abdomen, the right colic and middle colic drainage pathways sit medial to the haustra of the colon, embedded within the mesocolon and coursing toward the root of the mesentery. Nearby red arterial branches and blue venous tributaries provide orientation, while the small intestine occupies the central abdomen inferior to the transverse colon. Nerve strands track with the vessels. Attention to these lymphatic routes matters when you are staging colon cancer or planning oncologic resection, because lymphatic spread follows named vascular pedicles and dictates which nodal basins must be sampled or cleared. Right hemicolectomy and extended right hemicolectomy hinge on understanding drainage to epicolic and paracolic nodes, then intermediate nodes along the right colic and middle colic vessels, and finally central nodes near the superior mesenteric vessels. The anterior view also reinforces why ileocolic, right colic, and middle colic nodes are discussed together in pathology reports even when the primary lesion sits on the hepatic flexure.
