Description
Frontal sectioning through the male skull exposes the cerebral hemispheres with the cortical mantle (pallium) forming a thick, gyrencephalic rim around the deeper white matter. Prominent gyri and sulci define the superolateral cerebrum, while superficial cortical veins course over the pial surface and bridge toward the midline. Inferiorly, the brainstem continues caudally from the cerebrum, seated within the posterior cranial fossa. Surrounding bone anatomy is retained as a cutaway, including the orbital cavity anteriorly and the maxillary and mandibular region inferoanteriorly. A sectional skull view gives a cleaner read on how cortex relates to the cranial fossae and the intracranial compartment than a free brain rendering, and it keeps the clinical landmarks honest. Bridging veins and their relationship to the inner table and dura matter when teaching subdural hematoma after acceleration deceleration injury, where tearing occurs between cortical venous drainage and dural venous sinuses. Neurosurgical planning also benefits from appreciating how cortical topography sits beneath the calvaria, since craniotomy placement and dural opening ultimately aim for a specific gyrus, not an abstract lobe.
