Description
Anterior thoracic wall anatomy centers on the costal cartilages (cartilagines costales) of ribs 1 to 10, rendered as hyaline bars that extend medially from the osseous ribs to the sternum, with ribs 1 to 7 forming true costosternal junctions and ribs 8 to 10 converging into the costal margin via interchondral articulations. Superiorly, the first costal cartilage sits deep to the clavicular region at the manubrium; inferiorly, the cartilages slope toward the infrasternal angle at the xiphoid process. Lateral to the sternum, each cartilage continues as the costochondral junction, a palpable transition zone before the bony shaft of the rib. Midline orientation stays strict. Symmetry matters. Clinically, this anterior view is the one you want when teaching surface anatomy and common sources of anterior chest pain, because costochondritis and Tietze syndrome localize to costochondral or chondrosternal junctions and can be mapped rib by rib. It also clarifies why fractures near the costochondral junction may be occult on plain radiographs yet still destabilize the anterior chest wall, and it gives clean landmarks for parasternal approaches, sternal split considerations, and safe intercostal access that avoids the costal margin and the changing interspace width.
