Displayed in a left lateral thoracic view, the bony ribs sweep anteroinferiorly from the thoracic vertebrae while their anterior ends transition into costal cartilage, highlighted to distinguish chondral segments from rib shafts. Posteriorly, each rib head relates to the vertebral bodies and the intervening intervertebral discs, with the rib neck and tubercle aligning toward the transverse processes at the costotransverse joints. Superior ribs show shorter, more horizontal arcs; inferior ribs course more obliquely and extend farther anteriorly, where costal cartilages would approach the sternum and the costal margin even when the manubrium and sternal body are out of frame.
