Description
Centered on the thorax, the trachea descends in the midline before bifurcating at the carina into the right and left main bronchi, which then branch into lobar and segmental bronchi within the translucent lungs. C-shaped tracheal cartilaginous rings are seen anteriorly and laterally, while bronchial cartilage transitions into discontinuous plates that become smaller and more irregular distally as the airway caliber narrows. The right bronchial tree tracks more vertically and wider than the left, while the left main bronchus courses more obliquely toward the hilum, passing inferior to the aortic arch region in normal anatomic relationships. Fine peripheral branching suggests bronchioles and the pre-alveolar zone, even where individual alveoli are not resolved.
