Description
Rendered at approximately 20 weeks’ gestation, the conceptus is shown with the fetus in a flexed posture, head and trunk curled with the upper and lower limbs drawn toward the anterior torso. Facial contours, closed eyelids, and the external ear (auricle) are discernible on the lateral aspect of the head, while the neck remains short in proportion to the cranium. An umbilical cord courses from the fetal umbilicus to the placental disc, its characteristic helical twist implying the paired umbilical arteries spiraling around a single umbilical vein within Wharton’s jelly. The placenta appears as a flattened, discoid organ at the opposite end of the cord. This week of gestation is a practical teaching landmark because external anatomy has matured to the point that biometric and screening correlations become intuitive, including auricular development and overall fetal proportion. The cord and placental relationship matters clinically: abnormal cord coiling, velamentous insertion, or a single umbilical artery can be associated with fetal growth restriction and congenital anomalies, and the placental disc sets the stage for discussions of previa, accreta spectrum, and fetomaternal exchange.
